The Ins and Outs of Outpatient Physical Therapy at Richfield

The Ins and Outs of Outpatient Physical Therapy at Richfield

After an injury, stroke, surgery or extended illness, the next step in recovery is often outpatient therapy. But many find the idea daunting; not knowing what to expect, where to go or what the therapy options are. If we just described you or your loved one, you’re right where you need to be to learn the ins and outs of outpatient physical therapy.

Benefits of Outpatient Therapy

What can you expect from outpatient physical therapy? Quite a bit actually! It can help with:

  • Lower back pain recovery and management
  • Surgical recovery
  • Post fracture rehabilitation
  • Work-related injuries
  • Balance, fall and endurance issues
  • Mobility and function
  • Orthopedic conditions including upper and lower extremities
  • Range of motion and strengthening
  • Activities of daily living analysis and training
  • Evaluation and treatment of speech, language and swallowing issues resulting from stroke, brain injuries and progressive illnesses

Outpatient Therapy

The goal of outpatient physical therapy is to help patients restore mobility through, as the name suggests, physical rehabilitation. Physical therapists use a range of treatment modalities and techniques. They also teach patients how to prevent reoccurrence and/or manage their condition to reduce the need for surgery in addition to long-term reliance on medications, and help them to attain long-term health benefits.

Occupational Therapy

While occupational therapy also takes into account the physical aspects of rehabilitation and motion, it’s primarily focused on helping patients meaningfully engage in activities of daily life. To that end, occupational therapists assist their patients through therapeutic adaptations and modifications to their everyday environments.

Speech Therapy

Beyond speaking itself, speech therapy also includes the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of deficits in swallowing and/or communication in general. Treatments may include exercises to strengthen swallowing muscles, helping to improve sounds and pronunciation of letters and words, as well as in some instances, alternative methods of communication such as sign language.

Choosing the Right Outpatient Therapy Clinic

Just as no two conditions are exactly the same, neither are outpatient physical therapy clinics. That’s why it’s important to consider more than one to compare the approach to care, the experience and the options of each to determine the best fit for your needs.

First, make sure the care is personalized. At Richfield’s Outpatient Therapy Clinic, while we serve our residents as well as the local community, we focus on each patient individually. We take into account age, medical condition(s), lifestyle and goals to cater the rehabilitation program to restore your strength, mobility and well-being.

Experience is a key when it comes to physical, occupational and speech therapy. The outpatient physical therapy clinic you select should have expertise in the type of rehabilitation you are seeking and should have a reputation for high-quality care. Richfield Living has been providing Outpatient Therapy services to residents and the greater community since 2005, and we’re proud to be recognized locally and across Virginia for our care and services.
