Long-term Care And Rehab Coming To Roanoke
SW Virginia's first household model of care in Roanoke
As a senior’s decline in health requires a higher level of care with most daily activities, the decision to move a loved one into a long-term care facility can be difficult. Richfield Living recognizes this, and is the first in Southwest Virginia to adopt the household model of care on it’s Salem, and coming in 2021, at The Health Center at Richfield on the Roanoke campus. This innovative, resident centered household model of care puts the resident’s choices first.
At The Health Center-Roanoke, this model of care features all private bedrooms. The residents are empowered with the choice of when to wake up, when to eat, and when to bathe. Medications are tailored around their day, along with activities such as music or household duties like folding laundry that they enjoy. The residents and team look forward to learning circles, neighborhood get togethers, and family counsels that communicate the desires of the residents who live in these new homes. Also available are two memory households with certified dementia practitioners and specialized programs that include gardening and access to the courtyard.
Along with the household changes, the nursing style is different as well. The household team includes a clinical and a household coordinator ensuring the resident’s needs are the priority. The homemakers and team members share the responsibilities of managing the household and interact with the residents as family members. The team builds relationships with residents and families creating a bond and trust, extending the family atmosphere to the resident’s home at Richfield.
The physical setting and layout also flows in a new direction. Each household has a front door complete with porch, mailbox, and doorbell. After visitors ring the doorbell for admittance, they discover a large cozy living room with comfortable furniture for lounging and watching television, along with private bedrooms for every resident. The heart of the household, our full kitchen, lets residents enjoy meals and time around the table.
The social changes create a climate that encourages residents to lead in their care. The community can decide to have a party, adopt a pet, or work a puzzle. They will have the ability to buy special treats and the food available will include items they enjoy. Each household will have a culture that reflects the personalities of the residents, much like a family.
