Residents Give An Inside Look At Richfield Assisted Living

Doing your research is a must when considering assisted living for your loved one. You’ll likely research online reviews, ask for references, and, of course, do onsite visits. Those are all great ways to gain insight, but even with the most in-depth visit, you’re only capturing a point in time. We know that to get a true understanding of life in a Richfield assisted living community; you need to go the source – the ones who live it!  We’ve done just that as some of our residents and their families give you an inside look at their experience here.

The Accommodations

Hugh, Resident

I have a private room; really it’s like a small apartment. I could bring my own furniture and arrange it how I want. I have a nice bath and nice view out the back of my room. It’s very comfortable. You don’t feel confined and they really keep it clean. My bath is cleaned every day. I don’t think they could make it much better here.

Gary, Son of Resident

The facility is fabulous. When you walk in the door it’s very clean. In any of the different residences, it feels like a home.”

The Care

Kitty, Daughter of Resident

“After a stay in the hospital, mom spent five weeks in Richfield Rehab. She would have therapy five days a week; very specialized to her needs. We would go down to the pond to look at the beautiful surroundings of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You felt at home here, so we made the transition to assisted living.”

Gary, Son of Resident

Mom went to Richfield rehab after a hospital stay; that’s how we became familiar with assisted living at the Joseph C. Thomas Center. We had never thought about discussing mom going to assisted living before, but everything clicked at once. The people are friendly, the facility is great and the wonderful staff really worked with her to get her rehabilitated.”

Donnovan, Son of Resident

It’s best for mom to be here from a medication management standpoint, a safety standpoint, and the facility is all on one floor. It’s such a comprehensive facility it just met all of our  needs. And we felt such as sense of caring compared to the other places we visited – like we were people, where in other places we felt like a number. Have her here is so comforting to us, that she’s being well cared for, and is happy as well. We love Richfield because it gives her the sense that she’s still at home, my sister and I peace of mind, and my father the sense that he’s doing what’s best for his spouse.

The Staff

Ann, Resident

The nursing staff; they are fabulous and make you feel at home. I don’t even consider it assisted living here, I consider it just a home.

Gary, Son of Resident

The staff members are fabulous people, they make us all feel at home. They love mom and all the residents here. They go the extra mile to take care of them. Anytime something happens I need to know about, they’ll call me. They always keep me informed. The staff are family members to us, and mom wants to stay here. She says, ‘This is my home now.’ That makes the decision easy. We feel very comfortable that she is safe. When I leave daily, I feel really good about mom and where she is at. The best thing about Richfield is the people.

Hugh, Resident

“The Oaks seems to have their act together. When you have questions, there’s always someone to answer it, or they’ll refer you to someone who can.”

Donnovan, Son of Resident

“After rehab, mom came to the Joseph C. Thomas Center. We’ve been overly impressed, not only with the responsiveness of the staff, but the sense of us feeling part of the family; that’s what we were looking for. We visited four other facilities in the Roanoke Valley but this was by far the best. Mom knows the staff on a personal basis and feels that connection. I’ve actually called at 11 o’clock at night to see how she’s doing; they’ll check on her and will call me right back – that’s above and beyond.”

The Food

Hugh, Resident

“The food is excellent and the menu is pretty broad. They even have a committee of staff and residents who meet to change up the menu, take suggestions and they try to accommodate all the requests they can. They also have really good dessert; and have it at lunch and dinner.”

Gary, Son of Resident

“If you come here you are going to get fed well which is a blessing to our family.”

The Lifestyle

Ann, Resident

“I fell in love with The Oaks the minute I walked in the door. It just was not like any place I had been before. It would probably take me all day long to tell you the number of things we have to do here. It’s wonderful, and one reason so many love it here!”

Donnovan, Son of Resident

“Every day mom tells me someone comes and visits her. It’s a really convenient location here where at home, I don’t think as many could come.”

Hugh, Resident

“I do exercise classes, balloon volleyball and they have a wellness facility; that attracted me to Richfield because I’ve always been active. We also take scenic trips on the bus, to other activities and they have a lot of functions where you go out to lunch or dinner.

Hugh, Resident

“Mom needed help with her medications and might be a fall risk so we came to look around The Oaks. She was walking down the hall with us and she said, ‘I think I might want to stay here; I think I might like it here.’ And now I volunteer so I can see her, or else I wouldn’t be able to because she’s at every activity they have! She’s in such a loving atmosphere.”

Gary, Son of Resident

“There’s always something to do. They even give residents a calendar so they can pick what they want to do for themselves.”

Richfield’s Assisted Living Options

We offer two distinct assisted living residences on our campus — The Oaks and Joseph C. Thomas Center. Both residences strike the perfect balance between assistance and independence with 24-hour supervision, activity and wellness programs, health monitoring, medication management and meals, as well as assistance with personal care.
